Woody Plants - shrubs, trees & vines

Abelia gr. 'Silver Anniversary'
Its leaves have silvery white margins, and so glossy that they sparkle in sunlight. Lovely white flowers show from early summer until frost. The plant's full size is only two to two and a half feet in height and width. Eye catching ! Semi-evergreen.

Acer griseum - paperbark maple
A small-scale maple that has beautiful leaf color in autumn, and tannish colored bark that peels away from the trunk attractively. Consider protecting it from deer with netting for the first few years. Deciduous.

Berberis thun. 'Aurea Nana'
The barberries you will usually see are the darker leaved versions. This golden leaved, dwarf barberry is new and brightly colored. Grow it in full sun for the best color. And in autumn the leaves turn to a beautiful red. Deciduous.

Buddleia 'Adonis Blue'
(butterfly bush) 'Adonis Blue' is lower growing than the usual butterfly bush, reaching only five or six feet. Its deep blue flowers are very fragrant, and its blooming season is very long from midsummer into fall. Deciduous.

Cotinus coggy. 'Golden Spirit'
(smoke bush) Chances are that you have not seen a golden leaved smokebush. This is a new plant from the Netherlands that will reach a height of seven to nine feet. The leaves can take strong sunlight and will not scorch. In autumn the leaves turn to various colors of coral, red and orange before dropping. Once settled into a new home, a smokebush is one plant that can withstand drought and neglect. Deciduous.

Cotinus coggy. purpurea
(smoke bush) Attractive new leaves emerge a wine-red and change as they age to dusky-reddish color with a hint of purple. Will grow to ten or twelve feet in height. And the leaves turn to orange-red in fall, about the loveliest of autumn foliage. Deciduous.

Cytisus battandieri - Pineapple broom
A low tree, growing to fifteen feet, this has very fragrant flowers in mid to late spring. The clusters of flowers are four to six inches tall. Being in the broom family it survives very well in poor soil in full sun. It does not become a pest by seeding itself around, being very desirable and hard-to-find.

Daphne x burkwoodii 'Carol Mackie'
This low shrub is colorful and easy to grow. Its mature height and width will be about three feet. Each leaf is rimmed in gold. Fragrant, small, pale pink, star shaped flowers appear in May and June. It is very cold hardy, to minus thirty degrees Fahrenheit. Deciduous.

Deutzia g. 'Chardonnay Pearls'
White, pearl-like buds open to a shower of fragrant flowers in May. Its bright lime-yellow leaves are a nice complement to its neightbors in a flower garden. With age it will have many slender stems that arch gracefully. The height of a mature plant will be only two to three feet. Every other year prune a few of the oldest stems after flowering to keep it looking its best. Deciduous.

Euonymus fort. 'Blondy'
(winter creeper) Shiny, lustrous leaves have a very large "thumbprint" of clear yellow in the center of each leaf. This is very adaptable, usually being grown as a shrub, however can also be trained against a wall and encouraged to climb as a vine. It is one of the best broadleafed evergreens where winter temperatures drop below zero degrees F.

Humulus lupulus 'Aureus'
(golden hops) Growing quickly from a small plant into its full size of twenty feet up a support, this vine is very colorful in full sun with its golden leaves. Surprising to those who have not grown it before is its habit of sprouting anew each year from the ground and not from the previous years growth. In other words, at the end of a season cut away that year's growth back to the ground. This plant is very long lived, and next year's growth will come from the roots that survive from year to year. The plants we offer produce hops, round balls about an inch wide, that appear on the vine in late summer and have the typical hops scent that we enjoy closeup. Deciduous.

Hydrangea mac. 'Cityline Paris'
Typical of this new intensely red hydrangea are stronger stems and dark, glossy leaves. Its red flowers change to green as they age attractively, and grow in large rounded clusters. It has excellent mildew resistance, an important consideration in our cool, moist climate. Deciduous.

Hydrangea mac. 'Shamrock'
This has a lace-cap flower of large, doubled pink-blue flowers, beginning in July, that morph into shades of red as the season lengthens. The color is variable depending on the soil, being more violet on acid soils. A bit more compact than other lace-caps. Deciduous.

Hydrangea pan. 'Limelight'
Lime-green flowers are continuously produced all season. They are well supported and held upright on strong stems. In autumn, the flowers are a variety of colors in green, pink and burgundy. Deciduous.

Hypericum andros. 'Golden Tutsan'
(St. John's wort) A low shrub to three feet tall that is useful as a groundcover, this new plant may be too bright ! It has yellow flowers and golden leaves, and the flowers turn into dark red fruit, eventually becoming black. Used either as a highlight or in a group, it is a standout. Semi-evergreen.

Lonicera nitida 'Lemon Beauty'
This is a honeysuckle, not the vine everyone knows, but an evergreen shrub that can grow to five feet in height and width, called a box honeysuckle. Its leaves are very small and have golden edges. Deer do not bother it, and it is drought resistant. Has no flowers to speak of. Our favorite use is to keep it pruned small, as a foil to show off small, flowering plants in a mixed container.

Lonicera nitida 'Silver Beauty'
Identical to the previous box honeysuckle, with its small evergreen leaves, with the exception of the silvery white edges to its leaves rather than the golden edges of the former.

Parthenocissus henryana
(silvervein creeper) Deeply divided, fingery leaves of bronzy green that at first open a purplish color, are veined in cream. The color of the leaves is better in shade, and will be greener in stronger light. With some help to get it started, this vine will cling to walls or cover the ground on a small scale. The leaves turn a rich red in autumn. Deciduous.

Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile'
This mock orange grows to five or six feet tall with a narrower width. White flowers with a reddish flush in the centers open in late spring, and are sweetly scented. This is one of the most strongly fragrant of any of the mock oranges. Deer enjoy browsing the new growth, so protect for the first few years with some sort of barrier such as netting. Drought tolerant once established. Every other year at the end of the flowering, prune out a few of the oldest shoots.

Rosa chinensis 'Mutabilis'
This shrub rose grows between four and six feet tall and wide. Young shoots are purplish and the new leaves are coppery. Its flowers change color as they age and are modestly scented. The unopened buds are orange, then open to buff, next becoming a mixture of orange, rose, and crimson. A mature plant flowers from spring to frost.

Rosa glauca (rubrifolia)
A shrub rose growing from 5 to 8 feet tall and as wide, its leaves have a purplish or bluish sheen. Does not bloom all summer, but only for several weeks in early summer. The flowers are pink with white centers, grouped in clusters. Each flower is about an inch across. It has lots of character.

Sambucus 'Black Beauty'
The dark coloring of this elderberry is best in full sunlight. In shade the color is not as dark and is more green. 'Black Beauty' keeps its dark coloring better than other dark elderberries. It will grow quite large and wide, reaching ten feet within a short time. Contrasting with the dark foliage are its creamy pink flowers in June. Grow it as a shrub, or cut it back to the ground each year and use it as a bold perennial. Deciduous.

Syringa x Josee'
(lilac) 'Josee' tends to continue flowering after its main spring bloom, and being fragrant is much appreciated. It is a dwarf, growing to four feet, with pink flowers. Heavy pruning is not recommned, but only light thinning and removal of weak stems. Deciduous.

Taxus media 'Margarita'
(yew) Newer growth is a light lime-green that does not burn or become unsightly as with some others. The older foliage is dark green. It grows into a wide bush, up to five feet high in time and ten feet wide, although it will take some years to reach this size. Withstanding severe cold, this would be one good addition to an outdoor winter-container. A few good plants to consider using as companions in the same container would be low, ornamental grasses, the variegated arabis and aubrieta, with winter pansies for bloom.

Weigela 'Midnight Wine'
Leaves are darkly colored in burgundy-purple, with a profusion of rose pink flowers in May and June. Here is a dwarf and compact shrub that grows barely up to two feet tall and a bit wider. It would be perfect for the front of a flower bed or in a large mixed pot of flowering plants. Deciduous.
