x Solidaster luteus 'Lemore'

I am bending the rules a bit by including this plant in the “X” cateogory. Only because there are fewer plants beginning with this letter. Although you will often see this perennial listed without the “X”, it is also proper to include the “X” at the start of its name, for the reason given below.

This plant does not occur in the wild. It is one of those unusual plants that have been created artificially by combining two plants from different genera, an Aster with a goldenrod (Solidago). This has clusters of small golden flowers during the months of July and August. It not only blooms for many weeks in the garden but also lasts well when picked for a flower bouquet. Shown with it in the picture are the lavender blooms of Aster x frikarti, another plant that does not exist naturally. The “x” in front of the species name of frikarti indicates that it is the cross of two species of Aster. While the “x” in front of the Solidaster's name indicates it is the cross of two genera that do not normally interbreed.
