a book on yoga by Harvey Day

This slightly out of focus photo is of a tattered book titled, The Study and Practice of Yoga, by Harvey Day, published in 1953 by Thorsons Publishers in London. I picked it up about twenty years ago.

On page 119 is a list of foods to eat for breakfast, lunch (dinner to the Brits), tea and supper for anyone who wants to lose weight. The list is as follows:

  • breakfast
    • 1 glass orange juice
    • 1 baked apple with cream
    • 1 slice toast with butter
    • 1 glass milk
  • lunch (dinner to the Brits)
    • baked potato with butter
    • green vegetables or salad
    • 1 slice bread and butter
    • fresh or stewed fruit
    • 1 glass orange juice
  • tea at 4 o'clock
    • 1 glass milk
    • 1 slice bread and butter
    • jam or fruit jelly
  • supper
    • vegetable soup
    • potato cooked as you like
    • stewed or fresh fruit or fruit salad
    • 1 slice bread and butter
    • 1 glass milk
  • 10 p.m. 1 glass orange juice

When I first studied this list it did not look like a well balanced diet or nearly hearty enough for a normal person. It also looked too bland and repetitious, with a glass of orange juice or milk at every meal, and with vegetables and fruit to the exlusion of all else. But recent minor sugery has given me the will power to give it a try. I have to admit that there really is something about this diet that is special and a bit miraculous, if you can stick with it. For the first few days, possibly five to seven days, you may not lose any weight or feel any lighter. However, after about a week of sticking with it and keeping your portions from being too large, you may discover all of a sudden that you have lost five pounds, and need to tighten your belt a notch.

And a little back-sliding with eating some rich snackfood or a bit of richer protein will not add the pounds back on immediately. Of course some sort of aerobic exercise such as a daily brisk walk of forty-five minutes is helpful to a slimming diet.

Because I have high blood pressure, I need to limit my salt intake, so that making the vegetable soup from scratch rather than purchasing canned soup is necessary for my meals. Making soup from scratch will actually offer you a wider variety of soups to make, since a normal American grocery store has a wonderful selection in its produce aisle.
